1. Why Retaining Walls Require Engineering
A garden slope might seem harmless, but soil is extraordinarily heavy: one cubic metre of damp clay weighs over 1,700 kilograms. When saturated after prolonged rainfall, the lateral pressure against a wall escalates exponentially.
Building a simple single-skin brick wall to hold back earth is a recipe for collapse. Retaining structures exceeding 1 metre in height must be built from reinforced concrete blockwork with steel reinforcing rebar embedded into deep concrete footings.
2. Dividing Slopes into Outdoor Living Rooms
Rather than building one massive, imposing 3-metre wall that feels like a fortress, the most successful architectural design divides the slope into two or three stepped terraces. An upper tier might host a morning coffee pergola; the middle tier provides a dining patio; the lower tier features a flat, child-friendly lawn.
3. Hydrostatic Pressure & Drainage
Water is the enemy of retaining walls. Every wall we construct features a vertical dimpled drainage membrane against the back, 100mm perforated land drainage pipes wrapped in geotextile fleece, and backfill of clean crushed stone to channel groundwater safely away.
